Wherever You Go, Go With All Your Heart

I'm in the process of organizing the contents of my blog into categories to make it easier to navigate. Here's a little background information to help you understand my story.

In 2005, my little brother, Josh, and I were placed in foster care. My mother relinquished her parental rights shortly thereafter and now lives in Texas. She has struggled with alcoholism for many years and even though I no longer speak to her, I do still love her.

Josh was adopted in 2010 and he now lives in a small town in New York. Since I was older, I was never adopted and I moved to Georgia in 2009 to attend college.

Click the “Placement Timeline” link above for a detailed assessment of where we have lived.

I tell my story to inform, to inspire, and to show other foster children that they’re not alone.

Today I ran my first Warrior Dash and it was such a blast! One of the girls I ran with has really bad knee problems so we definitely took our time to complete all the obstacles - but in all honesty, that just made the fun last longer :) The official photos from the event will be posted online soon and I’m hoping they got a shot of me jumping over the fire obstacle!!

Watch out people! Tough ladies coming through!

My first day on the job, enjoying a free Diet Cherry Coke!

The past two weeks have been such a whirlwind of excitement. For one, I’ve finally settled in to my new apartment for the summer (which is an amazing 6 minute commute to Coca-Cola). I was a little nervous about moving in with 3 random roommates, but when I found out that 2 have already moved home for the summer and the other one pretty much lives with her boyfriend, I was so relieved. I’ll be waking up before 7:30 every day this summer and it’s nice to know I don’t have to worry about waking anyone else up.

And Coca-Cola is more incredible than I could have ever imagined.

Tomorrow will be my 3rd day at the internship and we’re hosting a massive mommy bloggers conference where we will educate parents about Coca-Cola’s vision to live positively by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and well-being (Subway and Seagram’s will also play a part in the event). Later in the day we’ll go on a special access tour of the World of Coca-Cola and we’ll conclude the day with dinner at a restaurant in Downtown Atlanta. The event will continue on Thursday and I’m sure it will be a success!

Oh, and did I mention that I’m working the Coca-Cola 600 where I’ll have VIP access to all the events?

Yep, that’s happening. Not only will this provide me with great in-the-field PR experience, but I’m also going to get a chance to hang out with the big shots! How can this summer possibly get any better!?

Hey everyone!

My apologies for falling off the blogging bandwagon recently – things have been absolutely crazy lately and I’m just beginning to get in the swing of things. I promise to post a great recap of all my Coca-Cola/moving to Atlanta excitement this evening when I get home! Let’s just say the entire experience has been unbelievable so far and I can only imagine the surprises the summer will bring. :)

My grades for the semester were posted last night (finally) and even though I’m super happy about how well I did, I was so close to a perfect 4.0 semester that I can’t help but be a little disappointed. I’ve been striving for all A’s for the past year and as you can see, I keep barely missing my goal! Fall 2012 will be the one, I can feel it!

Moving in general is not one of my favorite activities – but moving everything by myself? My yearly nightmare – especially this year…

It took me about 3 hours to make the numerous trips from my fourth floor dorm to my little ford focus and it was absolutely exhausting. All I can think about is how much easier (and quicker) the entire process would be if I had the extra helping hands of my parents. But since that’s not an option, I just power through the packing process and wait for the nightmare to end.

But then comes to joys of unpacking.

Atlanta is about an hour and a half drive from Athens and since I don’t have air conditioning in my car, moving into my apartment tomorrow is going to be a sweaty/teary mess – I just know it. Once my sweaty self finally gets to Atlanta, I still have to carry everything up the five flights of stairs to my new apartment.

But the sense of accomplishment I feel when I realize I did it all on my own makes it worth it…at least until I have to do it again.

Monday: study for finals and finish packing

Tuesday: Final 8-11, Final 3:30-6:30

Wednesday: Move out of Athens

Thursday: Move to Atlanta

Friday: Unpack

Saturday: 5K Warrior Dash!!

Sunday: Unpack more

Monday: FIRST DAY AT COCA-COLA!!!!!

(Correction: Warrior Dash is Saturday, May 19th!!)

Busy, right??

Thank you everyone for the amazing birthday wishes!!! My 21st was a complete success and I am SO GLAD it’s over. Here’s a little recap of all the excitement :)

We began the night at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop (since I LOVE their margaritas and Sangritas!), and of course, Shelli was there to celebrate <3

And I was so happy when two girls I met freshmen year (and we haven’t spoken that much since then) decided to come out and celebrate with me!

We had too many birthday shots

And too many birthday drinks

But it was all worth it to spend an evening with the people I love <3 <3

now if I can just make it through the rest of the week alive :(

As is true with finals time every semester, I’ve been slacking when it comes to keeping up with my blog. Hold in there everyone, I’ll have some juicy updates soon!!

Starting May 10, I’ll be living at WestMar student lofts- a convenient 1.3 miles from Coca-Cola

Everything is officially in order :)

Tonight was elections for 2012-2013 Executive Board members of PRSSA and unfortunately, I wasn’t elected as President or Vice President. Even though it’s not the end of the world since I didn’t win (I did get the Coca-Cola internship which is an incredible opportunity both professionally and networking wise), I can’t help but wish the outcome was different. I keep thinking about the little things I could have done differently to collect those last few votes…but hey, the decisions have been made.

I sent an email to the PRSSA advisor right after elections saying that even though I didn’t win, I’m very excited about the diverse crowd represented in next year’s E-board. I also expressed my interest in pursuing other leadership opportunities within PRSSA, such as co-directing our largest career fair of the year, ADPR connection. I genuinely care about how the organization runs and even though I’m not President, that doesn’t mean I’m not willing to commit myself to the success of the program. This was her response:

Rebeka,

My greatest regret this evening was that you were not elected to the board. I’ll certainly keep you in mind for ADPR Connection co-director. The mark of a true professional is how he/she handles defeat. You did well tonight and I’m proud of you.

You win some and you lose some

And I’m also happy that I finished it before midnight…helloooo bedtime!

We just finished up at Coke and everything went great. We’ll be notified by Friday who the two interns will be so let the waiting game begin!

I love this woman to death. Dr. Jones has been an incredible point of support and encouragement in everything I’ve done, and she always knows the right thing to say.

Tomorrow’s the big day!

Instead of going home after the 3AM showing of The Hunger Games and sleeping like a normal person, I headed to Starbucks to get some work done. Here’s what I hope to accomplish by the end of the day:

1. Complete two news articles for Journalism class - I attended a few guest speaker events the other day and I have to write an article summing everything up. This shouldn’t be too hard.

2. Call back my Guardian Ad Litem - I mentioned a little while back that I wanted to get in touch with my GAL from when my father terminated his parental rights, so I called yesterday and left a message with his secretary. He returned my call a few hours later, but I was out to dinner with a friend so I wasn’t in a good environment to answer - I’m going to give him a call back later today. I’m definitely excited and anxious to hear what he has to say (or if he even remembers me and my siblings).

3. Begin my Coca-Cola Assignment - I got the date for my final interview!! It’s going to be this coming Wednesday, March 28 from 11:30 - 3:00 at the Coke Headquarters in Atlanta. All four of the finalist received an email yesterday explaining the assignment we have to complete prior to the interview so I’m going to begin working on it this afternoon!
